Why do most people use 3rd person for their bios? I guess it sounds impressive, like there’s a fleet of journalist following them around, documenting their every step for their future best-selling biography. But that’s just not reality, right? Our personal story will be written by our own actions. Let’s put our name on it.
So here’s my three-minute autobiography.
I’m an Inbound marketer, or at least that’s what it’s called today. What I mean is that technology is evolving so quickly that today’s most important promotional channel, the internet, will have changed from the time I’m writing this to the point you’re reading it right now.
So a better definition of what I, and my esteemed colleagues, do is to watch technology trends for the promotional opportunities, and then work like crazy to grasp them before the moment is past, or a competitor catches up. Today, that opportunity is online.
Early in my direct marketing career, I saw how few companies were taking advantage of the internet channel, and began shifting my emphasis there. I quickly found that my combined creative, technical and analytical nature was a good match for the requirements of online marketing. My late-night freelance website projects soon turned into full-time 8-6 gigs full of the alphabet soup of online marketing:
- SEO – Search Engine Optimization, the practice of increasing the prominence of your website in search engine results, leading to growth in online visitors and customers.
- PPC – Pay Per Click advertising, the practice of displaying ads on search engines for relevant search queries in order to drive awareness and conversions.
- CMS – Content Management Systems, the background engine to modern websites that allow them to be quickly updated with fresh and engaging content for visitors.
- CRO – Conversion Rate Optimization, the science of honing the functionality, flow and display of online properties and processes to improve their performance and ROI.
- SMM – Social Media Marketing, the art of increasing awareness, conversions and SEO strength by engaging your audience on blogs and social networks and getting them to spread your message virally.
- HTML/CSS – HyperText Markup Language and Cascading Style Sheets, the code building blocks of modern websites.
Today, I help companies take advantage of the acronyms above, while preparing for all the new ones on their way.
Personally, in case you’re interested, I’m a very blessed husband and father of two young sons. I love spending time with my biological and church families, exploring the outdoors, reading bedtime stories, playing guitar around campfires, and watching good movies.
Hope to talk with you soon,
David
